Orange Beach Fishing Charters and Fishing Guides

Fishing Charter Tours

Our saltwater fishing charter tours are primarily divided into 4 geographical areas where we fish at. Each fishing area has a significant difference in the underwater habitats, water temperatures and at what depths the fish live. These habitats range from shallow water where the grass that is knee deep in bays, bayous, and coves, extending all the way out up to 200 miles in the Gulf of Mexico where the water is hundreds of fathoms deep.

Historically, for years in the commercial fishing industry and avid recreational anglers alike have primarily used two terms "inshore" and "offshore" to describe the two areas of fishing. The inshore fishing area (also known as a fishery) is governed by Marine Resources Divisionof the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. They manage and decided when any specific species can be caught, how many (also known as creel limit) you can keep while not to exclude, what method or gear we are allowed to harvest the fish with.

The inshore territory included the bays extending up to 9 miles out in the gulf from the sandy white beaches. A new term has recently been created called nearshore and is gaining momentum among the local fishing community to define two separate areas of fishing in Alabama state waters. To conclude, the inshore reef area now referencing the brackish waters north of the beach, while nearshore reef area describes the emerald green waters extending up to 9 miles south of the beaches.

Fishing Charter Areas

The offshore area, however, starts at the 9-mile marker south of the beaches and extends out up to 200 miles from the shoreline. Offshore waters are governed by a federal organization called the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council who decides the who, what when and where fish are allowed to be harvested. While the management agencies are regulating our fisheries to ensure the areas are not overfished to point of extinction, a third organization was formed in conjunction with 5 gulf states and Congress to create the the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commision, who works diligently on creating artificial reef habitats to attract more fish to the Gulf states sustaining our way of life.

The term, "Deep Sea" describes a portion of the offshore fishing area where the continental shelf begins to drop off of at least 80 fathoms deep and the color of the water from the surface becomes a vibrant royal blue. This is where you will find a lot of sport fishing taking place for big game fishingfor the elusive trophy fish. Now that you got the brief history lesson, to sum it up, we offer 4 different areas where we can take you on a fishing charter, each of which targets different species of saltwater fish, different fishing techniques and the duration of how long you want to be on the water to catch your favorite species to get mounted on the wall above the fireplace or for the tastiest morsel that satisfies your pallet. Awesome fishing with Captain Marty!

Tuesday, July 7, 2015Review of Fishing Guide Captain Marty Starling

Went on a half day bay fishing charter with Captain Marty and had a great time. He put us on fish and made sure that everyone on the boat had fun. The boat was very safe and comfortable and Captain Marty was very professional. Not only did he teach me and my kids about fishing, but about the different types of fish and sea life as well as their habitats and how the fish respond to changes in their environment. He didn’t just take us fishing, he was truly teaching us how to fish. I will definitely go fishing with Captain Marty again on our next vacation to Orange Beach!

Vacation Fun

We can’t say enough about Captain Marty. We had a little issue about booking times and the office went beyond being helpful. The fishing went great. We can’t wait to hook up again next year!

Our first fishing charter well worth it!

Friday, June 5, 2015Review of Fishing Guide Captain Marty Starling

Salty Dog was our first charter fishing experience, and I’d say it was very well worth it. Marty was very knowledgeable about the water and the fish and where to go and what we did wrong and right. He even had some super secret bait the fish loved!! :)) it was a great trip, and it’s definitely hard work for the captains of these boats. I definitely have a respect for them. Next time I’m definitely going to go with Salty Dog and do the offshore fishing trip with more people. Marty is awesome and so is Tina, the booking lady, she was so friendly and helpful, and they even let me bring my dog on the charter!! Thank ya’ll so much salty dog!! #keeprippinlips #louisianalovessaltydog
